Riding out the Storms of Life

Psalms 42:1-11

Pastor, Michael Garn

I. WAITING ON THE LORD. (verses 1-4)

The Psalmist looks to the LORD as his Chief good and sets his heart upon him accordingly, as he cast down his anchor, then he rides out the storm.

1A. In the midst of a storm we may be paralyzed; unable to do anything, but wait until the calm comes.

1B. We cannot think clearly and coherently when the storm is ragging all around us,: THEN PRAY.

When in a tornado warning you take cover and wait it out.

When in the storm we cannot see due to the blurred vision because of the rain and debree flying about:

1C. Wait until you can make a precise, intelligent decision.

Jesus is our anchor so get a firm grip and let Him hold you in place until the battle is over.

2. Holding the Anchor (JESUS) Requires:

* faith * reliance on Him * not being selfish..... because you are rendering 100% trust.

* strength ...to wait out the storm * prayer

While you wait on the storm your life is altered ; conveniences are not able to be used (lights, TV, air conditioning, etc).

Temporarily your thoughts are not on ; who is winning the ball game, what is on TV..... who is ahead on American Idol, the stressful hum drum of life?

3. Your thoughts may be;

* hmmm... I hope that my neighbor lady down the street is OK

* saying: " LORD please help this storm to be over real soon?"

* I do not care a whole lot that the food in the freezer is spoiled due to the power being off, but YOU ARE THANKFUL THAT YOUR FAMILY IS SAFE AND SOUND AND TOGETHER.

* you mutter under you breath; "praise God I'm glad that I'm saved" knowing whatever happens I'll be with the LORD one way or another"

* you have time (since the power is off) for conversation

* there is nothing to steal away your time with your family

* it is kind of fun just talking and sharing your daily events

* neighbors who were never neighborly, band together

(Extension cords are strung across the street to get power to someone who is in need).

Verse 1 "As the hart (deer) panteth after the water brook, so panteth my soul after thee, O LORD".

Sometimes it takes an interuption in life for us to look to the Lord.

Verse 2 Sometimes it takes a physical thirst for us to realize that we have a spiritual desire for godly things.

Verse 3 When troubles come and tears flow our natural response is to go to the LORD for comfort.

Verse 4 "I poured out my soul in me: for had I gone with the multitude, I went with them in the house of God

4. Countenance and hopes were lifted, praise, joy and worship were instituted as I was among God's people because they cared for me as the LORD is working out my problems.

Where do you go when you are injured? To the hospital Where do you go when your soul is hurting? To Church! Sin will keep you from God's Word or God's Word will keep you from sin! The choice is YOURS!

II. WORD: THE PSALMIST GOES TO GOD'S WORD. (Verses 5-9)

Allow Jesus to do a great work in your life today It is not possible to work our way to heaven, but we can receive Jesus and know that we are saved for eternity

1. He looks to God's Word: LOVING KINDNESS, MERCY, GOODNESS AND SECURITY IN CHRIST Psalms 42:7-8 "All the waves and billows are gone over me. Yet the LORD, will command his lovingkindness."

2A. His problems did not appear to be SO LARGE as he surrenders his problems to the Lord.

2B. After his own pity party the Psalmist realizes that his problems were not Mnt. Everest, but an ant hill as he hands over the situation to the Lord.

III. WORSHIP: THE PSALMIST WHEN CONFRONTED BY HIS ENEMIES HE IS ABLE TO KEEP FOCUSED ON THE LORD. (verses , 10-11 )

1. JESUS IS THE ANSWER! JESUS IS THE ANSWER! JESUS IS THE ANSWER! I'm glad that you asked? YES JESUS IS THE ONLY ANSWER!!!!! AMEN!

The Psalmist worshipped the Lord and bowed to his knees in reverence.

2A. Jesus is able to sustain us in ANY DIFFICULTY if we allow Him to do His work.

2B. Jesus desires that He will be first and foremost in everything!

2C. Jesus is waiting for us to ask... because He already has thought through our problem and he has the conclusion. There is NOTHING TO BIG FOR HIM!

2D. Jesus wants your praise and commands that we give GOD THE GLORYI D. Why art thou cast down? Why art thou disquieted?

2E. Who is (as the Psalmist says:) "Who is the health of my countenance and my God?"

WHY DO I NOT ALLOW FOR DESPAIR TO GET ME DOWN?

GOD IS FOR ME AND NOT AGAINST ME!

I Chron. 16:24 " Declare his glory among the heathen."

I Chron. 16:29 "Give glory unto the Lord the glory due unto his name."

Psalms 21:5 "His glory is great in thy salvation."

Psalms 29:2 "Give unto the Lord glory due unto his name: worship the Lord in the beauty oh holiness."

Psalms 104:31 "The glory of the Lord shall endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice that seek his works."

Psalms 105:3 "Glory ye in his name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the Lord."

Lk. 2:14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
